Index Investigation, an independent investigative NGO specialising in OSINT, audio-visual analysis, and 3D reconstruction (focused primarily on police violence and human rights violations in France), is seeking a Deputy Director to take on operational management, resource development, and communication, freeing the Managing Director to focus on editorial direction and research.
Key responsibilities
- Identify and monitor funding opportunities in France and internationally (foundations, calls for proposals, public grants)
- Write and submit funding applications
- Develop and maintain relationships with donors; represent Index at meetings, events, and conferences
- Manage and grow crowdfunding (campaigns, donor relations)
- Oversee funding tracking (reporting, summaries)
- Explore and develop new revenue sources (service provision, training, etc.)
- Coordinate the team’s day-to-day work: task allocation, deliverable tracking, deadline management
- Plan and organize all activity, including the investigation production schedule
- Oversee day-to-day administrative and financial management
- Co-define and oversee execution of the organization’s communication strategy and plan
Requirements
- 3 to 7 years of professional experience, including significant experience in resource development, operations management, or program coordination
- Experience in an organization of comparable scale (3–20 people): NGO, independent media, or civil society organization, ideally in human rights or investigation
- Demonstrated fundraising experience: preparing funding applications, relationships with foundations, securing funding
- Team management experience
- Rigor and attention to detail — described as the determining criterion
- Strong autonomy: ability to take a project from start to finish and find solutions without waiting for instructions
- Excellent written French; professional English (for relations with international partners and funders)
- Comfort with digital management and collaboration tools (particularly Notion) and integrating AI tools into daily workflows
- Sensitivity to data security and confidentiality
- Ability to work in a resource-limited, fast-changing environment with shifting priorities
